CRUDE AWAKENING: 18. What is crude oil and what does a barrel of crude oil make?

Guest blogger:  Bill – former sales engineer for Chevron Asphalt

Crude oil is the rough, unprocessed form of oil.  So, when you pull up to the pump remember this:

One barrel of crude oil contains 42 gallons. Out of that comes:

1. 19.5 gallons of gasoline

2. 9.2 gallons of home heating and diesel fuel

3. 4.1 gallons of kerosene –  type jet fuel,

4. 1.9 gallons of liquefied petroleum gases ( butane, propane, etc.),

5. 1.9 gallons of still gas

6. 1.8 gallons of coke (used in refining metals)

7. 1.3 gallons of asphalt and road oils

8. 1.2 gallons of petrochemical feedstocks (cosmetics, synthetic fabrics, plastics, etc.)

9. 0.5 lubricants (motor oil, greases, etc.)

10. 0.2 gallons kerosene

11. 0.3 gallons other

As you can see, a barrel of crude oil doesn’t just produce gasoline for your car.
